BRIDGE PROJECT
May 24, 2018 - In May, the students were divided in to 8 "Construction Companies" to build bridges using sandwich picks. This is a math application project where each group must cooperate to build the best bridge possible that can hold the most weight under a limited budget. They have to follow building codes, fill out order forms, write checks, and run their construction companies just like a real business. It’s a project that reinforces a lot of math skills, highlights social skills, and emphasizes concentration on details… and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun.
After 3 weeks of building, the exciting time came when the bridges were tested to see how many books they can hold. Each book weighs 4.66 lbs. As bridge after bridge went down, the last bridge left standing was the "Rainbow Dashers" group (Matthew, Lyeon, Tyeon, Gabriel) with the total of 21 books for an incredible sustained weight of 98 pounds!!! This is the all-time record in the history of Bridge Building Project in Mr. Pham's class. We all had a fun time working on this project!
