TEAM DEBATE
December 5, 2018 - Our Class had a Debate event pitting 10 teams of 3 students against each other. The purpose of the debates is to familiarize ourselves with the process of researching and finding facts to support of our position on certain issues. This is in preparation for our major writing assignment: Opinion Writing! The other benefit is learning how to use strong evidence to present your case and counter-argue effectively to get votes from the audience. Once each side had presented its case, the rest of the class, acting as the jury, voted for the side that persuaded them the most.
Here are the debate prompts and results of class voting.
1. Do police belong in schools? 91% YES - 9% NO
2. Should cell phones be allowed in class? 61% YES - 39% NO
3. Should beaches have rules? 65% YES - 35% NO
4. Should children be allowed to enter beauty pageants? 56% YES - 44% NO
5. I space exploration worth the money we spend on it? 43% YES - 57% NO
Since we had such a fun time and it was a great learning experience for all... We will do it again in the new year around February!!!
